What matter?

Selling rabbits without a license. There was no accusation of animal cruelty, let alone danger to humans.

How big was the business involved?

It had sold roughly $4,000-$5,000 worth of rabbits. And it had already closed under pressure from the regulators making the demand, the United States Department of Agriculture.

The USDA argues that major penalties are needed in order to induce other rabbit breeders to register, so that they can be monitored for violations of other rules. Well, this may get people's attention. For example, the young man whose parents thought he'd learn something from being involved in the rabbit business is now, no doubt, painfully aware that Americans aren't free to just produce goods and services people want to buy. They need permission and supervision.

Or more accurately, that's what federal law requires them to get. What they need is to be free.
